Yeosu Yeulmaru, cellist Park Ji-won premiere... Composer Lee Moon-seok,'Jindo Rhapsody' first

Reporter Hak-cheol Lee

Jindo Arirang is the essence of Namdo's folk songs. It is one of Arirang distributed nationwide, but has been widely admired for its artistry.

Composer Lee Moon-seok composed the cello concerto “Jindo Rhapsody,” with the motif of Jindo Arirang, and premiered at Yeulmaru, Yeosu on December 10, with cellist Park Ji-won.

Rhapsody, as a musical term, is a fantastic instrumental song with epic, heroic, and ethnic colors that are free and have no regular form.

This work was created based on the Namdo folk song Jindo Arirang, and although it is a free form, it has the structure of the introduction part-A-B-A-C overall.

For the Jangdan, Jungmori and Whistle were used, and a polka rhythm was added to the whistle to make the East and West match.

It was born as a song for cello and piano, but it was made into a song that can be collaborated by a Korean Orchestra and a Western Orchestra.

Composer Lee Moon-seok said, “The thing that comes to mind right away during preparation to compose a cello song was Arirang Jindo, which I normally liked. I was planning to make it thoroughly using Korean melody and jangdan. He said he changed it.

As a result, he said that he aimed for a song that clearly showed the melody of Jindo Arirang, and that he came up with a little variation.

This composer thinks that Korean music is moderation and free change, but he applied it as it is. The most focused part is Western instruments, but they can taste our taste, and although they are Korean instruments, they can comfortably play Western music.

If he talks about the characteristic part of the song, he used whiplash and polka rhythm at the same time in the part that rushes in the back of the song, but he made it reminiscent of the exciting and unstoppable samulnori.”
