Gwangyang Works succeeded in localizing 100% of low-odor refractory materials, which depended on imports, ‘successful achievement’

Import substitution of ‘low-odor refractory materials’, which plays an important role in the decision to produce high-quality molten iron.. Quickly solve technical problems such as quality deterioration and erosion, and reduce the cost by one-third

Reporter Kim Doo-hwan

POSCO Gwangyang Works announced on the 17th that it had succeeded in localizing 100% of 'low odor refractories'.

In order to produce high-quality molten iron at Gwangyang Works, the components of the molten iron contained in the converter must be uniformly adjusted. For this purpose, oxygen is blown from the upper part of the converter and an inert gas such as argon is blown from the lower part, and the latter is called 'low odor'.

At this time, a refractory material that can withstand the hot temperature inside the converter is built on the floor. This is called 'low odor refractory material', and if the tube that puts the inert gas of the 'low odor refractory material' is clogged or the amount is not correct, the molten iron will not be mixed evenly, so it can be said to be a key factor in determining the quality.

Gwangyang Works has been using all of these “low odor refractories” imported from Japan.

Accordingly, if a technical problem such as a drop in quality or erosion occurs, it will inevitably take a lot of time and money to solve it, so it is necessary to localize the material.

Therefore, the Gwangyang Works Nojae Group, the steelmaking department, the steelmaking research group, and POSCO Chemical are promoting the localization of 'low-odor refractories' and, at the same time, starting full-scale collaboration with the goal of improving performance such as reducing the degree and speed of erosion compared to existing imported products.

Gwangyang Works first analyzed the operation data of the 1st steel mill to draw improvement points, and POSCO Chemical developed a method to prevent warping of customs in refractory materials based on this.

In addition, the Steelmaking Research Group of the R&D Institute drew a plan to suppress the clogging and erosion of 'low odor refractory materials' and designed the structure anew in consideration of the number and flow rate of customs.

Gwangyang Works completed the pilot application of the newly developed low-odor refractory ‘Pos-MHP’ through this process to one converter at the 1st steel mill, and completed the expansion to the entire plant. As a result, the 1st steel mill in Gwangyang Works was transformed into the first plant to which 100% of ‘localized low-odor refractories’ was applied.

'Pos-MHP' is more meaningful in that it succeeded in localizing the low-odor refractory materials that had been imported entirely, differentiated the number of customs compared to the existing ones, and lowered the cost by one-third.

An official from Gwangyang Works said, “We are very happy that we succeeded in localizing low-odor refractories.

Meanwhile, this year, Gwangyang Works completed the establishment of the 'Nojae Group Refractory Material Repair History Management System' that can secure facility stability through monitoring the condition of refractory materials using facilities and quantitative analysis of the optimal number of times to use refractory materials for each facility, spurring refractory material quality improvement activities. is going to add
